This role is not a traditional community development or arts producer role.

Positive Carrickfergus has been developed in an emergent way, deeply immersed in the context of our town and community. We listen carefully, working with what is emerging through the relationships we build to engage people and build confidence that the community can deliver changes that we want to see, rather than waiting for others to do it for us.

Other people’s work that inspires and informs us

We are inspired and energised regularly by the work and thinking that we see happening across the world. It’s important to us that we acknowledge those people who have inspired us, and it will be vital that the successful candidate connects with this work.

You do not need to understand this work in detail to apply for this role, but you might like to do some further reading to understand what we’re about, what will be expected of the successful candidate as they deliver this project, and whether we are the right organisation for you.

We have been strongly influenced by the work of the International Futures Forum in how we have defined this role and, if you are interested in applying, we recommend that you read what they say about the Creative Producer competencies.

We have also been influenced by the following writers and these specific books in how we do things and what we do:

Adrienne Maree Brown – Emergent Strategy
Rob Hopkins – From What Is to What If: Unleashing the Power of Imagination to Create the Future We Want
Jon Yates – Fractured: How We Learn to Live Together
We are part of a wider movement of organisations and initiatives that are helping to build the ‘Citizen Story’ outlined by Jon Alexander in his book, Citizens: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us.

Our approach to creating the conditions for positive change in Carrick is underpinned by systems thinking and practice and Cormac Russell’s work on Asset Based Community Development.

Role Purpose

We are excited and grateful to have received funding for this role from the National Lottery Community Fund and believe it presents an amazing opportunity to prioritise community and creativity in Carrickfergus and make a real difference to how we see ourselves and what we believe is possible.

A Magical Day with the Flower Fairies

Saturday 27th April 2024

The Town Hall was absolutely bursting with activity on Saturday, not only was the Acoustic Evening a resounding success, but earlier in the day some of our younger residents had the opportunity to flex their creative muscles with local artist Debbie Fitzsimmons as they had a Magical Day with the Flower Fairies.

The children got a chance to make fairy swings for their gardens, paint fairy doors and make special fairy perfume from locally grown flowers. the young people were totally enthralled through the two-hour workshop and had lots of ideas about future art activities, including dragons and horse themed events. We would love to hear from you if you have any ideas about what you would like to see happen – just get in touch.

We hope that the fairies enjoy their presents as much as we all enjoyed making them! There are loads more photos on our Instagram page.

Spring 24 Acoustic Night

Another cracking evening in Carrickfergus Town Hall with our Acoustic Night packing out the space. The space, looks well on a sunny evening with low lighting, cabaret seating, coloured bottles with metallic foliage decorating the silver tables and all catching the last rays of golden hour in what is typically a large beige hall.

We had some great chats with people inside and outside the venue about how great it is to have events on our doorstep and how much you all love the ‘bring your own bottle’ element to our events. You’re welcome and thanks for letting us know what matters so we can keep doing it! We love watching everyone have a great time and feel at home in the space with full charcuterie and wine bottle coolers.

Thanks to all who made the event the success it was: volunteer crew, PA technicians, performers, security and the ever faithful janitors who keep the space ship shape.

Thanks to everyone who shared their story with me and dont forget to check out photos from the event on our instagram page.

Spring 24 Vinyl Market

As always, Belfast Record Fair brought sellers with a huge variety of vinyls, you could spend hours sifting through them and find many, many gems.

In an attempt not to spend all my money, I bought 3 in the end, I spent the afternoon asking people what they bought and why and it was probably the most joyous part of my day. Emotional, reflective, reminiscent conversations about youth, movies and growing into adulthood were pretty much the main content. It reminded me of why I love vinyls and why I am building a collection, even though I dont listen to them all the time. It’s the reasons behind the music, the time in my life that it takes me to, how those songs make me feel because of where I was when I first heard them. I have a library of feelings in my living room. It’s also that they make me feel like Im in the room with the bands, the wide sound of an open room rather than a clean, shiny studio. We all wanna be a rock star, or I do anyway.

Thanks to everyone who shared their story with me and dont forget to check out photos from the event on our instagram page.

Pop-Up Cinema

Saturday 16th March 2024

Ahoy me hearties! It was a wet Saturday afternoon, but we escaped to sunnier climes with Muppet Treasure Island. Thanks to Strand Arts Centre we were able to have another pop-up cinema event for all the family. It was a beautifully chaotic couple of hours. Pop-up cinema is a great opportunity to see if your wee ones are ready to sit through a movie,  it’s not too dark and you can move about if you need to. Next time we hope to make it even more accessible and have subtitles thanks to some really useful feedback. Keep telling us what you would like to see happen in Carrickfergus and we will work with you to help make it happen.

Come along and hear new and experienced local performers playing in a chilled atmosphere. With cabaret seating and bring your own bottle feature, we know this evening is going to be another one to remember. Tickets are only £5 and can be purchased using the link below or at the door on the night.

Join Positive Carrickfergus for a bank holiday weekend treat. We are showing another classic movie for all the family, this time Muppet Treasure Island. Carrickfergus has seen its fair share of swashbucklers through the years, now we are joining Kermit, Miss Piggy and Gonzo on a seafaring adventure based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel.

Bring your own snacks and enjoy the movie in a relaxed environment!

The Big Carrick Quiz

The Big Carrick Quiz was a sold out event that had 27 teams battling it out to life the shield and become the town champions!

Team ‘Quiz Khalifa’ took the title but it was a close race to the end, with teams ‘Pete, Gordon, Ruth’ and ‘The No Hopers’ all finishing close together in second and third places. One of the more memorable rounds from the evening was the Music Round with 8 different versions of the traditional song “I Wish I was In Carrickfergus’ being performed; the teams had to name each performer to win points. Our love/hate relationship with this song continues…

So much thanks to ‘Bill the Thrill’ of Deja Vu Promotions who organised and hosted the event – what a cracking job he did! We are excited to see what Deja Vu Promotions come up with next- we promise to let you know as you wont want to miss it. Also loads and loads of thanks to local town businesses who supported the raffle for the evening by donating gift vouchers. All funds from the raffle have been safely stored away as the start of our festival fund – keep an eye out for more details of this too over the next few months.

Don’t forget to check out photos from the evening on our instagram page.
